The reflection of Week 47

First we had a wonderful lecture about design research. The lecturer communicated us with how to filter information in the times that is filled up with new design. Then, he told us that when creating devices people should also check whether it fulfills the customers’ requirement or not.

When evaluating design, specific rules should be followed as well. Each area owns its general standard to check. Then, researchers need to discuss effectiveness, efficiency as well as satisfaction by various methods. Also, ANOVA are applied in the data analysis on the last step.

This week we had an interesting topic, design research. Designs are always based on theoretical background and created to deal with prototypes. Then, researchers need to apply evaluations to check the performance of design.

The picture above is the stracture of design paper from one of my seminar group. The theoretical background is design theory ISO 9241 UCD, by using which three automobiles audio products are invented. The prototype in this design is that three audio product, Audio Feedback, HDD and HUD are occupying similar marketing share currently and competing with each other furiously.

Then, researches used both quantitative and qualitative method to evaluate which system works better. Precisely, researchers designed tasks like how many second can system find direction and so on, and then utilized meters to measure the variables. Interview about customers sentimental information after system experience are tested later. After analyzing data, author concluded that Audio feedback looked best from number result, and HUD feedback can provide costumers best using experience.

Re-scanning my paper as well as the post before lecture, I found there is one problem in my post before. The prototype should correct to football play in mobile phone, and theoretical background should be mobile phone vibration. My evaluation part is quite different as my seminar group’s paper. My journal paper just used quantitative method to deal with it. However, research followed three steps, from the simplest situation to the one that got most close to the fact.

As a conclusion, researchers always used various evaluating method to test the functions of design. It can be one or more quantitative method to show result by data. It can be diverse qualitative method to find people’s sentiment towards design and detail of products.

  2. I remember Haibo mentioned that we can evaluate an idea by price it. Do you think that a design can only be evaluated by commercial price? I think commercial value is kind of short term value and we can also take into account that long term value like contributing to society to evaluate an idea.
